Here I go again!
This will be my sixth year doing this ride. It's a great event which raises much needed funds for ALS Research and support. I'm totally stoked that my son Carl will be joining me this year for the 100 mile ride. Being a fit 23 year old, I'm expecting the biggest challenge for him will be making it to the line for the 6AM start :-) Another cool change for this year is that Carl and I are part of a team, "Irish Thighs are Cryin'", featuring my brother Pat, his wife, the wonderous and decidedly Irish Katie, and a smattering of other folks Katie arm-twisted into joining up.
What is ALS?
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
- The average life expectancy of an ALS patient is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
- Every 90 minutes someone in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease.
- ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may die from ALS unless a cure is found.
- Caring for a loved one with ALS costs on average of $200,000 each year.
