Riding Wine Country for your Donation
I ride to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness for the urgency to find treatments and a cure. I look forward to being a new participant at the Napa Valley Ride to Defeat ALS and Walk, sponsored by Golden West Chapter of The ALS Association. Currently, there is a handful of drugs and multiple clinical trials seeking simply to extend the life of a person with ALS. And here I am, 2 years after diagnosis of Bulbar Onset ALS, organizing a fundraising team and preparing to ride to Defeat ALS. How lucky am I? Read on and you will understand why.
Resources are often scarce for those with this rare disease. It takes special food, doctors, medicines, supplies and medical equipment to extend the life of an otherwise-healthy person. The funds raised by the Golden West Chapter of the ALS Association serve patients in 31 counties in central California and Hawaii.
What is ALS?
- The average life expectancy of an ALS patient is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
- Every 90 minutes someone in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease.
- ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may die from ALS unless a cure is found.
- Caring for a loved one with ALS costs on average of $200,000 each year.
