Team Tortoise is named for our pet tortoises. We enjoy watching them navigate the obstacles of our yard, and are impressed with their persistence at achieving their objectives. If they want to eat a flower that's above their heads, they'll keep pulling at the stalk until they find a way to enjoy that tidbit. If they want to climb up a rock, they extend their legs to get a clawhold on any little rough spot. If the claw slips, they try again and again until they catch something, inch forward, then begin the next incremental step of the climb. It takes them time, but they get there in the end.

We aim to emulate the persistence of our tortoises. We try to get to our goals, whether related to health, travel, family connections, time with friends, or anything else. ALS slows David (and therefore us) down, but our aim is to keep moving and keep enjoying.

WHY WE WALK - WE NEED YOUR HELP 

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.

ABOUT ALS 

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. 

ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease, yet it still costs loved ones an average of $250,000 a year to provide the care people living with ALS and their families need.
